Civil Engineering Faculty

INTRODUCTION

Update 20/04/2020 - 01:00:00 AM (GMT+7)

At the foundation of Saigon Technology University in Spetember 1997, the Faculty of Building and Construction Technology (FoBCT) was born with the mission to train learners of the specialization of Civil and Insdustrial Construction. At first, the FoBCT just opened a regular associate program of 3 years. In 2004, the FoBCT opened a regular bachelor program of 4 years.

In 2005, the FoBCT continued to open a 2 year regular vocational program and an 18 month regualr pathway program from the associate’s degree to the bachelor’s degree. In the beginning of the academic year 2015-2016, the FoBCT trained about 1,200 students of all the training sections.
In the academic year 2015 - 2016, the FoBCT built post-graduate programs, starting with a master program that would go into operation and enrollment in the academic year 2017-2018.
The FoBCT also worked with the Non-regular Training Faculty in bachelor programs (providing evening courses in periods of 4 years). The credit-based education system was applied for the regular assocate and bachelor programs in the academic year 2009-2010.
Since the establishment, all the FoBCT programs have been constantly operated; the number of graduates has increased annually, creating a footprint of the FoBCT in all the areas of Civil and Insdutrial Construction. At present, there are about 2,300 students in the specilization of Civil & Industrial Construction at the FoBCT.
In 2011, the STU President allowed the FoBCT teaching staff to work in collaboration with the Alumni Committee to establish a scholarship fund for students who overcome difficulties and study well. On the occasion of Teacher's Day in the years 2011 and 2012, the fund delivered more than 60 scholarships. The Fund is now on the increase, and thereby encourages the students to put more efforts for better learning results.
Since 2012, the FoBCT has been allowed to organize extra-curricular programs like Mechanics Olympic, Eureka Club, English-for-Specific-Purpose Club as regular activities, aiming at fostering hard-working students, thereby improving the quality of teaching and learning.

FACILITIES
At present, the FoBCT has enough laboratories to serve the teaching and practice, the research and testing of conrete, cement, soil and steel.
An Applied Computing Center located at Room B406, Block B on the STU campus has been invested for teaching and supporting lecturers and students to access and use tools of structural calculation via computer. In November 2012, STU continued to equip the Center with one more computer room, meeting the increasing academic needs of students
Also, a Geodetic Lab located at Room D106, Block D helps perfect the knowledge of topographic survey for the FoBCT students.

PERSONNEL
At present, the full time teaching staff of the FoBCT consists of 36 lecturers. They are in charge of teaching all the courses of the specilization of Civil and Industrial Construction. 1 Assoc professor, 9 of them are doctors, 25 masters, and 1 architect. All the doctors graduated from universities in foreign countries like France, Poland, Czech Republic, America, Japan, and Korea. Most of the other lecturers got their master’s degrees from Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Da Nang University of Technology, and Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture.

BACHELOR TRAINING PROGRAM
At present, the FoBCT is operating the training program of Civil and Industrial Construction based on the framework by the Ministry of Education and Training, in which some courses are designed with their own identities under the FoBCT’s training mandate and relevant regional factors.
Under the general policy of the STU, in 2010, the FoBCT announced the learning outcomes of the Building and Construction Engineering program.
The total number of credits required for the completion of the regular bachelor program is 133.
All the students at the associate and bachelor levels are required to submit a graduation paper for the course Graduation Thesis (5 credits). Their inal paper must be approved by the Graduation Defense Committee. Those who complete the program are granted with a bachelor’s degree in Engineering degree accredited in Vietnam’s National Qualifications System.

POST-GRADUATE PROGRAM
In the academic year 2015-2016, the FoBCT constructed a post-graduate training program, starting with a master  program. This program would go into operation and enrollment in the academic year 2017-2018.
Master program of Civil and Industrial Construction has the total number of credits: 60, including required and elective courses. To complete the master program, learners are required to conduct a thesis and defend it before a Thesis Defense Committee. Those who complete the program are granted with a Master’s degree in Engineering accredited in Vietnam’s National Qualifications System.

CAREER PROSPECTS
The FoBCT learners of all the training sections and levels are trained with definite career orientations so that they can work in the reality enviroment after graduation. The details are as follows:
Associate level: There is a wide range of job opportunities. They can work as group leaders, designers, auditors, and topographic surveyors. For those with good competences, they can participate in teams of design, construction, assessment of small and medium-sized projects. Besides, after having proffessional experience of three years, they can be admitted in a bachelor’s completion program.
Bachelor level: The background knowledge is emphasized, and the construction development is updated so that the FoBCT graduates can participate in almost every stage of a project from small to large or extremely large scales. Among their required qualications, design is a remarkable one since it forces them to update unplanned knowledge, whereby they teach themselves to satisfy the increasing demands of society.
